DHL FASTEST PIT STOP AWARD - 2ND PLACE

DHL - F1 - 2024

DHL Fastest Pit Stop Award Trophy

Overview

I'm excited to share my entry for the DHL Fastest Pitstop trophy design competition (2023)! Inspired by the precision and power of F1 wheel guns, my trophy design captures the cutting-edge technology and expertise of pit crews.

Designer Note
The wheel gun is the most iconic tool in F1 pit stops. It represents the perfect blend of precision engineering and high-stakes performance—exactly what I wanted to capture in this trophy design.

To honor the spirit of Formula 1, I used a combination of eco-friendly aluminum and high-performance carbon fiber composites. The trophy's intricate design showcases various finishes of aluminum, giving it a sleek, modern look.

Industrial-grade hex screws securely anchor all components to a solid aluminum base with a polished mirrored finish, ensuring both stability and durability. Standing at about 30cm tall, this trophy is a striking symbol of the excellence achieved in F1 pit stops.

Materials & Construction

The trophy features a thoughtful combination of materials that reflect both the high-tech nature of Formula 1 and sustainable design principles. Each component was carefully selected to create a cohesive and visually striking award.

Designer Note
The contrast between the polished aluminum and carbon fiber was intentional—it represents the duality of F1: the gleaming, public-facing spectacle and the raw, technical performance underneath.

Design Process

The design process began with extensive research into F1 pit stop equipment, particularly the wheel guns that are crucial to achieving record-breaking pit stop times. I wanted to capture both the technical precision and the high-stakes energy of these moments.

Designer Note
I spent hours watching slow-motion footage of pit stops to understand the exact mechanics and movements. The socket design at the top of the trophy is an exact replica of the multi-point sockets used in actual F1 wheel guns.

After developing initial sketches, I refined the concept through 3D modeling, carefully considering the proportions, material transitions, and visual balance. The final design incorporates authentic F1 design language while maintaining a distinct trophy silhouette.

The result is a trophy that honors the incredible teamwork and split-second precision required to excel in Formula 1 pit stops, while also serving as a beautiful object that represents the prestige of the award.

Designer Note
The mirrored base was a late addition to the design. I wanted something that would create a sense of reflection—both literally and metaphorically—to represent how this award celebrates the reflection of countless hours of practice and perfection.
